A leader in the home appliance industry set out to reduce weight and noise while improving development costs of its washing machines. Naturally they called upon another leader, ITI, for help.
SE/ALD™
ITI's System Engineering / Analysis Leads Design (SE/ALD™) process was used for the program. With SE/ALD™, baseline simulation models are employed to analyze and visualize design alternatives and optimize designs that correlate with actual test data during new concept development.
This speeds product introduction by eliminating the need to design and build multiple prototypes while new design alternatives can be studied and selected during the up-front stages of product development.
77% Reduction to Outer Tube Weight
30% Cost Reduction
Testing
Operating data was collected and used together with computer models of the washer. As the models were run through their paces simulating usage scenarios, engineers could more fully understand where improvements could be made and how design changes would impact the washer's performance.
Results
Thanks to ITI's Systems Engineering and Analysis Leads Design process, reliability of the washer was increased 30%.
Which is more, these goals were reached while reducing the weight of the outer tube by 77% and dropping development costs by 30%. The project was, by all measures, a tremendous success.
